Habibullah Azizi Obituary, Savannah, GA Accident Death: In Loving Memory

A tragic crash in Savannah has claimed the lives of Habibullah Azizi, a Lyft driver in his 30s, and his passenger after a police pursuit ended in a violent collision late Wednesday night. According to authorities in Chatham County, the incident began just before 10 p.m. when deputies attempted to stop a black Chevrolet Trailblazer on Pennsylvania Avenue, but the driver refused to pull over, sparking a chase through local streets.

The pursuit ended at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Capital Street when the fleeing SUV ran a red light and crashed directly into Azizi’s vehicle. The impact was severe, killing both Azizi and his passenger at the scene and leaving both vehicles heavily damaged with debris scattered across the roadway.

Habibullah Azizi had resettled in the United States after fleeing Afghanistan and was described by friends as a hardworking man dedicated to building a better life. He worked as a driver for Lyft, supporting his family and sending money back home. His passenger has not yet been publicly identified.

Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Trailblazer was arrested shortly after the crash and is facing vehicular homicide charges. Two additional passengers in the fleeing vehicle were also taken into custody, including one with an outstanding felony warrant. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation, reviewing dashcam and surveillance footage to determine how the pursuit unfolded and whether proper procedures were followed.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been created in Azizi’s memory to help cover funeral expenses and assist in returning his remains to Afghanistan. Friends and loved ones continue to remember him as a devoted family man whose life was cut short while simply trying to make a living.
